We’re a friendly bunch at FOLK2FOLK and we love seeing the positive and life changing impact finance can have. We get to know our customers so we thought you might like to know a bit about us too. Over to you Andy…
I grew up in Exeter with one older brother. As a family we followed Exeter City football club and my childhood consisted of being dragged to football matches every weekend by my Dad. Football has been a constant in my life, and I’ve grown up watching Exeter, Plymouth and Torquay and playing for several local junior league clubs.
I went to school in Exeter and discovered a talent for cross-country running; going on to represent the school and trialled for the county. I studied Business Studies at Exeter College which gave me a good grounding for understanding business and after leaving I bounced around trying on different jobs for size from retail, insurance, a pub and even a greyhound track! I met my wife when I was 19 and decided it was time to knuckle down and commit to a career.
I joined NatWest as a junior clerk with a view of working my way through the clerical grades to assistant manager level. This involved me doing whatever was required including counting and balancing the cheques at the end of the day before I could go home. In fact, I worked alongside one of my current FOLK2FOLK colleagues in the NatWest Tiverton branch when I was about 22, so it’s nice to be reunited at this more mature stage of our careers!
I worked for NatWest for 17 years and while there I sat and passed my banking exams and progressed up to senior relationship manager. I left Natwest in 2002 and joined the Bank of Scotland, which was subsequently taken over by the Lloyds Bank Group, and spent the next 17 years working within the Lloyds Bank Group throughout the South West.
I have worked in a frontline lending role across most Industry sectors for 20 years working within SME and Corporate sectors in both Business Development and Relationship Management roles. I have experience of Wholesale funding, Asset Finance, Revolving Finance, Term loans and working capital requirements in secured finance, sanctions, recoveries as a Litigation Manager, and was part of Lloyds Agricultural team for ten years.
As a Senior Relationship Manager, I knew of all the players in the marketplace so was very aware of FOLK2FOLK and its good reputation, and could see they were an emerging force in the South West. I saw several Bank customers of mine, who we weren’t lending money to, go to FOLK2FOLK and get loans. I also knew several ex-colleagues who worked at FOLK2FOLK and who all said it was an enjoyable place to work. So, when I was made redundant by Lloyds Bank Group in 2020, I thought I’d like to work there; so called them. Though no job was advertised they agreed to interview me and immediately there seemed to be a natural fit.
Today I am happy to be a Business Development Manager for a growing business genuinely passionate about delivering the best possible service to its clients and introducers. I enjoy working as part of a successful team helping to turn potential borrowers’ aspirations into reality. Throughout my career I have always been praised on the quality of my application report writing and my understanding of the business I’m proposing, and I’m pleased that this has continued at FOLK2FOLK with all but one of my proposals having been approved by FOLK2FOLK’s credit committee (at time of writing!).
I’ve now been married to my childhood sweetheart for 33 years and have three grown up (and nearly independent!) children and two grandchildren. I am happy to say they all live reasonably close by with my youngest attending university in my hometown of Exeter. I now live on the North coast of Cornwall and enjoy walking the dog on the beach, surfing, paddle boarding, Kayaking – any beach related activity really. Also enjoy watching my beloved Liverpool FC and still go to as many matches as I can…bank balance permitting!
