MEET THE FOLKS: Lisa McGuinness

We’re a friendly bunch at FOLK2FOLK and we love seeing the positive and life-changing impact finance can have.  We get to know our customers so we thought you might like to know a bit about us too. Over to you Lisa…

I was born in London and grew up in Whitstable and Canterbury, Kent the eldest of four siblings with a younger sister and twin brothers.  I left college after studying Business and Accounting and started my Banking career in Barclays.  I worked around most of the Southeast at Barclays for about 15 years then decided to move to Edinburgh where I worked in Edinburgh and Glasgow for 5 years.

Whilst working in Scotland I moved over to Bank of Scotland and helped to set up the offset lending products, spending time within the different Commercial teams and ending my time at Bank of Scotland in  Specialist Property Finance as a Business Development Manager looking after new lending for Doctors, Dentists, Vets, and Accountants.

I then had the opportunity to move back to London and work in central London with the corporate teams lending more than £350m for large property developments.  I then met my husband – 17 years ago now – and relocated back to Kent to start a family.

For the last 14 years, I have worked in front-line customer-facing roles at Lloyds focused on lending and supporting the local business community enabling the growth and diversification of local SMEs. It was challenging at times but always rewarding. To get a lend over the line and see the empowerment this gives to that business to thrive is fantastic!

Over my career so far, I have acquired experience working in wholesale funding, asset finance, term loans, and working capital.  The nature of the areas I have worked in has allowed me to gain experience in most sectors: property, trading business, biofuel, and regeneration to name but a few. But if I had to narrow it down, I’d say my specialty is property, diversification, and agriculture, I particularly like supporting the growth of businesses.

Folk2Folk is a breath of fresh air after stepping away from High Street Lenders

Folk2Folk is a breath of fresh air after stepping away from High Street Lenders and I have said this many times since I started here! Also being able to fully utilise my skills and experience to their full potential is so empowering.  You never know what is going to land on the desk, you can work through this pragmatically and what stands out the most for me is, does it make sense?  Can they afford it? Can we help them?  We are a solution for a lot of funding problems,  and I’m impressed with how quick FOLK2FOLK are and how they work together as one team with the primary goal of getting the funds to the customer in the quickest time possible. Never in all my years of banking have I witnessed teamworking like this.

Working in the Southeast, I have London on my doorstep as well as the Garden of England and the seaside all within 20 minutes. I live by the seaside in Ramsgate with my husband and daughter and our lovely shihpoo Teds.  As a family, we love long beach walks, holidays when we can, and love nothing better in the summer than meeting with friends at the beach for cocktails and barbeques in the garden.

My loves include reading Japanese history and my daughter was a scholarship Ballet Dancer so weekends were spent hours on end sitting waiting for Ballet recitals but she has now given this up and we attend a local Pilates studio together a couple of times a week which is great fun.

I enjoy painting when I can, meeting up with my local artist friend over a bottle of wine catching up, and painting (sometimes!).  I also have a passion for antiques and can be found trawling antique fairs in the summer indulging my particular love of Italian Pottery!
